Pipeline right-of-way inspection by drone: every finding by chainage

← Back to the article

Simulated. The scene is computer-generated and the findings shown are the ones planted in it; no model produced them.

A drone follows an invented pipeline for about 1.3 km. The first part of the line is above ground on supports; it then goes below ground and is followed by marker posts. Planted along it are the things a right-of-way patrol looks for: a shed and an excavator inside the strip, a truck where none should be, trees over the line, a washed-out crossing with the pipe in the open, a damaged support, a missing marker, and warm and cold patches that show only in the thermal view. Each one is listed by chainage, the distance along the line.

Computer-generated pipeline right-of-way seen from a drone: a cleared strip across farmland with an above-ground pipe on supports, and numbered markers on the planted findings.

What this demo shows

A patrol, written down by chainage

  • The right-of-way strip, its two edges drawn in, and the line inside it.
  • Ten planted findings of eight kinds, on the line and in the strip around it.
  • Where each one is: chainage along the line, and which side.
  • A one-screen patrol sheet built from the same list.

What is simulated

All of it

The corridor, the drone, the flight and both camera views are drawn in your browser. The findings are the ones this page planted in the scene, so the list is read from the scene itself and not from the picture. No trained model runs here, and nothing on this page was tested on a real pipeline.

Limits to keep in mind

A picture of the job, not a result

The thermal view is a simple model: ambient temperature, plus sunlight, plus the warm and cold patches we planted. It is not a measurement, and a real patch like these can have several causes. There are no accuracy, speed or coverage figures here, because nothing was measured.
